Ohio Wet and Fresh – Fresh Hop IPA 2021

Ohio Wet and Fresh

Ohio Wet And Fresh - Fresh Hop IPA

This is our annual “Wet Hopped” beer featuring Ohio Hops.  Wet hops refers to brewing with hops freshly harvested and used in the brew without drying and processing them.  “Fresh” refers to the same hops that are dried and used within weeks of harvest.  Due to the water content, you have to use 5 times the weight of “wet” hops you would with regular hops, but this produces a uniquely fresh flavor that sets it apart from a typical IPA.

For those not in the know, “Wet hopped” refers to brewing with hops freshly harvested and used in the brew within hours of being picked without drying or any processing.  “Fresh” refers to the same hops that are dried, pelletized and used within weeks of harvest.  Due to the water content, you have to use approximately 5 times the weight of “wet” hops you would with regular hops, but this produces a uniquely fresh flavor that sets it apart from a typical IPA.

Our Ohio Wet & Fresh IPA uses both processes of Ohio hops featuring the two aforementioned new local hop varieties, one of which (Alleigh, part of the fresh hop addition for dry hopping) which has never before been used in a commercial beer.  Citrus, tropical, and fruity character dominates this beer’s flavor and aroma, we think compares very favorably to some of the more well-known hops used in IPAs today.

To keep the Ohio theme we again used West Branch malt and to mix it up a lil we brewed this as a Hazy IPA but used lager yeast fermented closer to ale temps….yes, counter-intuitive, but who knows until you try 😉
