ABV and IBU's

Alcohol by Volume

Alcohol by Volume

Percentage of ethanol, the intoxicating component found in beer, usually perceived as a warming sensation.  The State of Ohio limits the alcohol production by breweries to approximately 7.5% ABV.  This allows us to brew all but a few styles like barly wine and a few high alcohol books.

Examples for Comparison:

  1. Bud Light - 3.3% ABV
  2. Bass Ale - 4.7% ABV
  3. Samuel Smith's Taddy Porter - 5.1% ABV

Internation Bitterness Units

International Bitterness Units

Accepted method of expressing hop bitterness in beer.  Simply, the higher the number, the more bitter the beer will be.   Scientifically, it is the dissolved iso-alpha acids expressed in parts-per-million.
